I’ve always believed that when a team is in chaos, what it needs first isn’t a brilliant tactical blueprint or a brand-new system. What it really needs is to wake up. And somehow, Carrick managed to do exactly that in just a few training sessions.
Shorter sessions, higher intensity. It sounds like a familiar fitness slogan, but for this Manchester United side, it was a genuine jolt. Players were no longer just “going through the motions,” no more dragging themselves to the end of practice. Everything was faster, sharper, demanding full focus from the first minute to the last.
The shift in atmosphere at Carrington didn’t surprise me at all. When the tempo goes up, there’s no room for drifting, for boredom, for self-doubt. You either step in—or you fall behind.
Carrick didn’t overcomplicate things. He didn’t try to prove he was some tactical genius. What he did felt very “Carrick”: clean, clear, straight to the point. Every session had a specific purpose. Every small detail was adjusted, from off-the-ball movement to touches that might seem insignificant on the surface.
What I really appreciate is how Carrick built his coaching staff. Not a collection of familiar faces for comfort’s sake, but pieces that genuinely complemented each other. Steve Holland brought tactical depth. Woodgate understood players in a very practical, grounded way. Jonny Evans acted like a direct line into the dressing room. A coaching group that listens, communicates, and—most importantly—pulls in the same direction.
The players felt it almost immediately. When the people leading you are clear, consistent, and aligned, you play with belief instead of doubt. And that was exactly the energy United showed in the derby against Manchester City.
The 2–0 win wasn’t just about three points. It felt more like a statement: United’s problems weren’t because they were suddenly a bad team, but because they had lost their rhythm, their connection.
Carrick doesn’t need to prove he’s a great manager—at least not yet. Just making Manchester United look like an actual team again is already an achievement. And sometimes, the best changes don’t need to be loud. They just need to come at the right moment.
